Raine Spencer: Princess Diana's stepmother dies aged 87

Princess Diana's stepmother Raine Spencer has died aged 87.

Countess Spencer died this morning at her London home, her son William Legge, the Earl of Dartmouth, confirmed.

In a short statement the family said: "Raine, Countess Spencer, died peacefully at her home in London on 21st October, 2016, after a short illness."

She was the daughter of romance novelist Dame Barbara Cartland and Diana's father Earl Spencer was the second of her three husbands.

The pair married in 1976 when she was a Westminster Conservative councillor and they remained together until he died in 1992.

A member of the Harrods board of directors, the countess was aoccasionally seen working in the world-famous store.
