Bookmakers have reported a flurry of bets on the Duchess of Cambridge's second child to be called Charlotte.

Punters appear convinced Kate will give birth to a girl after going into labour at around 6am on Saturday.

Alice was previously the most widely backed name - but Paddy Power has now made Charlotte the favourite.

The bookmaker said more than half of all money taken on baby betting today was put on Charlotte - causing odds to be slashed from 7/1 to 9/4.

A Paddy Power spokesman said: "Punters are seriously getting caught up in Charlotte's web and sending Alice back to Wonderland."

As the long wait for William and Kate's second baby continues, Britons are squeezing in last-minute bets.

A William Hill spokesman said: "The royal baby betting is starting to go into overdrive with the turnover at William Hill alone expected to go through the £100,000 mark today - suggesting an Industry turnover in the region of £500,000.

"The wait is almost over and punters are rushing to get their bets on before it is too late.

"The latest predictions suggest that the baby will be born on Thursday, she will be a Princess and she will be called Alice."
