Royal multi-faith mini-marathon

12 April 2012

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have gone on a multi-faith mini marathon, visiting a mosque, a Sikh temple and an Anglican cathedral in Pakistan.

Charles and Camilla ticked off the three religions in less than three hours while on a day trip to Lahore.

At the impressive Badshahi Mosque, the Duchess did not make the same mistake Diana, Princess of Wales, encountered in 1991. Hardline mullahs were outraged when Diana turned up to tour the religious site with her knees on show in a skirt they considered far too short for the sacred precincts.

Camilla's legs were firmly hidden by her long dove-grey tunic, which fell well below the knees, and her ivory palazzo trousers.

It was the same outfit she wore to a mosque in Cairo earlier this year on a royal trip to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India, when she exhibited her frugality then by wearing items from her tour wardrobe more than once.

The celebrated Lahore mosque, which holds 55,000 worshippers, is the second largest in Pakistan.

Charles and Camilla also saw the Sikh Gurdwara Dera Sahib and Lahore's Anglican Cathedral Church of the Resurrection.

The royal couple went about adapting to each of the prayer sites' dress requirements in turn.

It was shoes off for the mosque, with Camilla wearing a dupatta shawl covering her hair, before footwear off again for the Sikh temple, with a headscarf for Camilla and a white topi hat for Charles.

At the cathedral, Camilla's scarf was back around her neck.
