Six hurt in shopping street crash

12 April 2012

Six pedestrians were taken to hospital after they were hit by a car on a busy shopping street.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is in custody in a central London police station following the accident in Regent Street in central London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said two people were seriously injured and another four required hospital treatment.

A 200-metre section of Regent Street was cordoned off by police and a Kia Carens people carrier, which had crashed into the side of a newsagents, could be seen on the pavement at a right angle to the road.

The people carrier was being driven by a man and there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

The police spokesman said two women, believed to be in their 20s and 40s, are in a serious condition suffering severe leg injuries.

Two other women and two men are understood to be stable.

Police were called to the accident on Friday evening.

A police officer manning the cordon said the vehicle had been crossing Regent Street when it collided with a group of pedestrians.

"One person had their leg nearly torn off," he said. "He was in agony and was shouting."
