Britain: hotter than parts of Australia

Britain was hotter than parts of Australia today as record February temperatures saw people flocking to beaches and parks.

It reached 18C in Coleshill, Birmingham - hotter than Falls Creek in Victoria despite it being summer in Australia, as well as Tenerife and Marrakech.

St James's Park saw London's hottest temperature of 16.7C and last night had the warmest February night on record, staying above 13.2C in the early hours. The Met Office said the temperature come close to the February record of 19.7C, recorded in 1998 in Greenwich.

Temperatures were three times higher than February's 6C average and matched June's average peaks of 18C. Tomorrow is expected to see peaks of 13-15C.
