The UK's 'worst and most amusing' public Christmas trees for the 2018 festive period

Sophie Williams25 December 2018

Come December, cities and towns across the UK are decorated in celebration of Christmas.

From the traditional Norwegian Fir tree in Trafalgar Square to Somerset House’s giant tree, people flock to see the beautiful decorations.

While many are seen as ‘Instagrammable’ others are posted to social media for the entirely wrong reasons.

Here in London, a tree in Muswell Hill sparked ridicule.

At around eight-feet tall, the puny spruce barely peeps over the wooden fence that surrounds it, prompting ridicule on social media.

The tree was put up in St James’s Square by volunteer group Muswellife, who had planned a 15ft tree but were forced to scale back due to the health and safety and insurance costs involved.

Grimsby's tree went viral on social media.

The town’s regular tree, gifted by Norway died and a mini tree was put in the town centre in its place.

A few days later, a brand new tree was installed.

A tree in Tyldsey was also criticised by locals.

With Rebecca Buck writing: “If there’s a worse one in the country, I’ll sit on the top myself.”

Luckily, a few days later, a group of volunteers completely transformed the tree with colourful decorations.

In Northallerton, Yorkshire, local residents criticised their tree.

Lewis Botfield wrote: “Only in Northallerton would you see a Christmas tree this bad.”

However other locals rushed to its defence.

Alison Walker said: “I wouldn’t call it the worst Christmas tree in the UK – never be too quick to judge people!”

A futuristic Christmas tree in Birkenhead has been labelled “poverty stricken” after it was installed.

The tree is made of metal and is covered in lights.

According to one user on social media, it is located right in front of a vacant shop.
