Tories slam tactical vote call

Two Labour ministers have called for tactical voting in Lib Dem/Conservative marginals
12 April 2012

The Conservatives have launched a vicious attack on Labour's record as they sought to warn people off tactical voting.

A nine-minute video has been emailed to 500,000 people comparing New Labour's ambitions upon taking office with its record over 13 years.

It highlights knife crime, child poverty, the recession, national debt, sleaze and government waste among areas where there has been a "disconnect" between aspiration and delivery.

Unveiling the broadcast in central London, shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt urged people who were considering voting Liberal Democrat to "think again".

"A vote for the Lib Dems is not a vote for change, it's a vote for uncertainty and quite possibly for keeping Gordon Brown in Downing Street," Mr Hunt warned.

The intervention came after senior Cabinet ministers sent out signals to supporters to vote tactically for Liberal Democrats to keep David Cameron out of 10 Downing Street.

Welsh Secretary Peter Hain said people should "vote with their heads, not their hearts", while Schools Secretary Ed Balls acknowledged there is an "issue" in Lib Dem/Conservative marginals where Labour supporters want to keep out Conservatives.
