Two dead after police car chase

12 April 2012

Two people died and four more were seriously injured when a car crashed after a police chase.

The BMW hit two pedestrians and another car in Haringey, north London, moments after speeding away from police.

Scotland Yard said officers in a marked car had earlier tried to pull over the BMW, with three people inside, but it had failed to stop.

Police followed it around London's busy North Circular road but then "lost sight" of the car shortly before the crash, which happened at about 1am.

A police spokesman said: "At approx 1am there was a fatal road traffic collision on the A406 junction with Brownlow Road, Haringey, N13. A short time earlier a marked police car had indicated to a BMW being driven in Pretoria Road to stop.

"The vehicle with three occupants, two males and a female, sped off. Police were following the car but lost sight of it on the North Circular.

"They then came across the BMW on the A406/Brownlow Road where it appears to have been in collision with central reservation traffic lights colliding with two pedestrians and a second vehicle."

One of the pedestrians was taken to hospital but pronounced dead a little over an hour after the crash. The driver of the second car also died after being taken to hospital while the other pedestrian's condition was described as "critical" by police.

Scotland Yard added that all three people in the BMW were in hospital and also in a "serious" condition.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said.
