A high school in Florida has apologised after it was accused of “slut shaming” pupils by publishing photos of what is appropriate to wear at prom.

Stanton College Prep in Jacksonville faced a backlash after a student shared a photograph of four flyers which had been put up in the school.

The posters showed different styles of outfits including with a low-cut neckline, a backless number and a dress with a thigh-high slit.

Next to these dresses the school had written: “Going to Stanton Prom? No you’re not.”

But beside a fully-covered prom dress, with only arms showing, the words read: “Yes you are. Good girl.”

Student Lily Willingham posted a picture of Stanton College’s flyers on Twitter, sparking many other young people at the college to “band together against dress codes”.

Many began wearing t-shirts with symbols representing womanhood in support of students while others came out on social media in support of the protesting students.

Cooper Connelly said: “Stanton College Prep, Jax FL.

“#1 in the state, #3 in the regions, #6 in the nation, last in respect.”

Molly Shah said: “So… this Stanton College Prep in Jacksonville… apparently they say “good girl” and shame black bodies.”

In a tweet Duval County Public Schools, the organisation behind schools in the district, said: “The display of prom dress photos at Stanton College Prep is not appropriate or an approved policy. Images were removed on Mon."
