Barack Obama belted out Jingle Bells with Santa Claus as he switched on the National Christmas Tree at the White House for his final time as US President.

Mr Obama and first lady Michelle Obama turned on the red, white and blue lights that adorned the massive tree, with help from their daughter Sasha.

He marked the occasion with a wish that Americans will care for the sick, the hungry and the downtrodden this Christmas.

“It’s a message of unity, and a message of decency and a message of hope that never goes out of style,” Mr Obama said.
