Police have released a Tunisian man they had suspected of helping carry out the Berlin Christmas market truck attack.

German police had arrested the 40-year-old on suspicion of being involved in the rampage which killed 12 people in the Breitscheidplatz.

Prosecutors initially though the man’s phone number had been found on the mobile phone of main suspect Anis Amri.

Investigators had suspected Amri might have sent a message and a picture to the man just before the December 19 attack.

But on Thursday, investigators concluded he had not been in contact with Amri immediately before the massacre.

Frauke Koehler, spokeswoman for the prosecutors, said: “Further investigations determined that the man who was provisionally detained isn't this possible contact person of Anis Amri, so he had to be released from custody,"

Amri, 24, who had links to known Islamists, was shot dead by police four days after the attack.

He is believed to have driven the truck that plowed into the market.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video showing Amri pledging allegiance to its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Investigators have determined that the video is genuine, Ms Koehler said.
