Billionaire Michael Bloomberg has entered the race for the Democratic presidential nomination with an initial $37 million (£28.7 million) television advertising campaign.

The former New York mayor will spend the money in states across the US in an attempt to make inroads in the contest — three months before the first primary elections are held.

In his first campaign advert, shown in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday, the narrator says: “He could’ve just been the middle-class kid who made good, but Mike Bloomberg became the guy who did good.”

He adds: “And now, he’s taking on him [Donald Trump] — to rebuild the country and restore faith in the dream that defines us where the wealthy will pay more in taxes, and the middle-class get their fair share.”

Left-wing senator Bernie Sanders — one of the 17 other Democrats hoping to be the party’s candidate — last night railed against billionaires “trying to buy elections”.
