A five-year-old boy has shot his nine-month-old brother dead in a tragic accident in a town in Missouri.

The boy found the gun lying on a bed at the house in the town of Elmo, before firing it by mistake, US police said.

The child's mother had originally suspected her baby had been shot with a paintball gun but later realised it was a .22-calibre Magnum revolver, CNN reported.

Sheriff Darren White, of the Nodaway County Sheriff's Office said the gun belonged to a relative but not the mother.

"At this point foul play is not suspected, and it appears at this time that the shooting was accidental," the office said.

Sheriff White told KETV: "We have a lot of people that own weapons. They hunt. They target shoot. ... Most people are very safe with them, and this is one of those cases where everything went together in the wrong way."
