A British couple in their twenties have been found dead in a hotel room in the Indian city of Agra.

The bodies were found by police in Hotel Maya, close to the Taj Mahal, police said.

Police have said they believe the deaths are linked to a suspected drug overdose and there was no suggestion of crime.

Indian officers have identified the pair as James Oliver, 28, and Alexendra Nichola Gaskel, 24, from their passports.

Breaking Indian news website NDTV said the two arrived in India on July 11 and travelled to Agra on October 18.

They were originally staying at the Residency Hotel before they were moved to Hotel Maya on October 20.

Hotel staff called police on Tuesday morning when there was no response from their room.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to take place. The British High Commission is expected to arrange for the bodies to be repatriated.
