These are the faces of some of the Afghan children killed by a suicide bomber in an attack on Nato headquarters in Kabul.

Eight people — nearly all children — were killed in the bomb blast, which was carried out by a teenage boy wearing a suicide vest.

Among the victims are sisters Khorshid, 14, and Parwana, 12, their brother-in-law Asad, 16-year-old Nawab and Mohammad Esa, 13.

The tight-knit group of friends eked out a living selling scarves and bracelets to the diplomats, soldiers and journalists visiting the heavily guarded Nato building.

Their customers told how the youngsters shared their earnings, which helped to support the adults in their families, and were often seen joking and playing on skateboards when they were not working.

Several of them helped with Skateistan, a Kabul-based charity which uses skateboarding to engage with children and provide educational programmes in Afghanistan, Cambodia and Pakistan.

Omid, a 14-year-old boy who was part of the group and who was on his way to work when the attack took place last Saturday, said: “When I go to bed my friends are all waiting for me, asking me to come swimming. I see their faces and I can’t sleep.”

Families have now banned survivors from working outside the Nato HQ.
