The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Iron Man 3 are sure to be the most hotly-anticipated of all the big-hitting showcases at the Comic Con convention this year.

A crowd of around 130,000 are gathering in San Diego this week for its annual pop culture convention, most of them donning their finest fancy dress to pay homage to their favourite fantasy film characters.

The popularity of the convention is easily-explained. Fans are treated to exclusive footage on giant screens, while actors and famous filmmakers fly in to promote their latest projects and meet their fans.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be discussing their enormously successful Twilight saga, while Hollywood veterans Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are appearing to promote The Expendables 2.

Lord of the Rings obsessives, famously very dedicated, will be eager to see the sneak preview of The Hobbit, as well as getting to see Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood. It is rumoured that director Peter Jackson will also be there to talk through the extended film clips and answer fans' questions.

So far details of The Hobbit have been kept carefully guarded, but Elijah Wood has said that the anticipation for the release in December is quickly building: "everything feels a little bit bigger. For so long, people didn't think there would be a Hobbit film, so the fact that there is finally, people have been anticipating this for a long time."

Unusually, the band Coldplay will debut their six-part comic series that tells the story behind Mylo Xyloto, the character in their last album.

Other films holding panels will include Total Recall, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Iron Man 3.
