Dramatic moment tower block goes up in flames in UAE

Laura Proto29 March 2016

This is the dramatic moment burning embers were seen falling to the ground after a major fire broke out at a residential tower block in the United Arab Emirates.

The fire struck a tower in Ajman emirate, north of Dubai, before spreading to an adjacent block.

The tower block was evacuated and firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

Several people were reportedly treated for breathing problems and minor injuries, but there were no reports of serious injuries.

Footage of the blaze shows burning debris falling from the building, with roads in the immediate area cordoned off by police.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is at least the four major high-rise fire in the UAE in three years.

Last New Year’s Eve, a blaze hit a downtown hotel in Dubai and in February last year, a fire broke out at a 79-storey residential block in Dubai.

In November 2012, a 34-storey residential building, also in Dubai, was partially gutted by a fire.
