The hunt for an “escaped tiger” intensified in France today as footprints were found next to a motorway service station and guards were placed around local schools.

Helicopters and police marksmen armed with tranquillisers resumed the search at around 6am following the first reported sightings near Paris yesterday.

Today prints “of a young tiger-like animal” were found eight miles away from Montevrain, at a Total petrol garage close to Ferrieres-en-Brie.

“All precautions are being taken to make sure everybody is safe,” said a local council spokesman.
