At least 44 people have been killed after a bus plummeted into a gorge in the Himalayas.

Police were desperately trying to reach casualties after the horror crash in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

About 12 other people are understood to have been injured.

Images show the wrecked 28-seater bus surrounded by the scattered possessions of passengers after Sunday’s accident.

It had been travelling from Bhoan to Ramnagar when it fell into the 700ft deep gorge in the hilly district of Pauri Garhwal.

Deepesh Chandra Kala, a disaster management officer confirmed that 44 people had died in accident.

Rescue attempts hampered by heavy however 20 people have been pulled from wreckage so far, senior police official Sanjay Gunjiyal said.

Mr Gunjiyal said the bad weather could have caused the bus to skid off the road.

He said: "It is raining (in the area) since morning. Two days back there was a landslide in that area."

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet he was "extremely saddened" by the crash.

He wrote: "My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest."

More than 110,000 people are killed every year on India's deadly roads.

The country’s roads, particularly in the hills, have long been feared for their deep potholes, reckless drivers and often a lack of guardrails.
