A teenage girl is seriously injured in hospital after a man cut off one of her hands with a sword in an alleged row over a phone charger in northern India.

The girl, 15, received multiple stab wounds in the attack at a busy marketplace in the state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday afternoon.

Her attacker was wrestled to the ground by passers-by who detained him until police arrived.

Police said a dispute over a mobile phone charger was being investigated as one possible motive for the attack.

The victim allegedly borrowed the charger from the brother of the man who attacked her and he became angry when she apparently refused to return it.

The suspect was the girl’s neighbour and well known to her family, according to police. He was being quizzed by officers on Thursday.

Police told BBC Hindi that the victim's family believed that the man had also been stalking her.

Her uncle, Sushil Kumar Trivedi, said that she was walking to his house along with her mother to charge her phone when the attack took place.
