A massive clean-up operation is underway to clear thousands of bees from a motorway after a truck carrying them flipped over.

Photographs shared online show the bees spilling onto a busy interchange, in the state of Washington, at around 5am local time.

Dozens of beehives packed with bees littered the dual carriageway near Seattle.

The driver of the lorry told reporters the bees were currently 'relaxed', but when the sun comes up they will become angry sparking a race to get them back to safety quickly.

The truck flipped on its side when one of its tyres burst, US officials said. The driver was not injured.

Rescue crews wearing protective suits are currently racing to clear the road.
