A man who claimed he was not wearing a face mask because of a "bad pimple" has been fined by Australian police.

The man from the Port Phillip area, south of Melbourne, was one of 29 people who were fined for not wearing mandatory face coverings on Wednesday.

When confronted by police for not wearing a face mask after leaving his home, the man said he had a "bad pimple".

In total Victoria Police said they issued 204 fines in the past 24 hours for breaches of coronavirus restrictions.

The breaches included a man who visited a friend while he was awaiting coronavirus test results.

According to 7 News, police fined a number of people for holding illegal gatherings, including a group of seven who were found drinking alcohol in Prahran Square.

Police also discovered a group of five men who were celebrating a birthday at a house in Braybrook.

People who breach Covid-19 restrictions in Melbourne face fines of up to $1,652 (£904) and $5,000 (£2,736) if they test positive for the virus but fail to self-isolate.

It comes after a fight broke out on a plane to Ibiza when two passengers refused to wear a face mask.

KLM confirmed there was an incident on the flight on Friday after two passengers "misbehaved verbally and physically".
