Dozens of people were injured in Mexico City as clashes broke out after 80,000 people joined a march on International Women's Day.

Police said some groups threw petrol bombs and officers responded with tear gas.

In another incident, a group of women outside the Metropolitan Cathedral clashed with men protesting against abortion who made Nazi salutes.

Elsewhere, masked women with hammers smashed a car windshield, overturned a van and burnt doors of buildings.

At the National Palace, activists tossed Molotov cocktails over female police officers in riot gear.

The day’s clashes left 65 people with injuries.

Demonstrators said they attended to show outrage over femicides, which have risen 137 per cent in the past five years.

There were also clashes in the Chilean capital Santiago where 150,000 protesters gathered.
