New York takes its first steps out of lockdown as shops reopen

New York was taking its first steps out of lockdown today with non-essential businesses including shops and construction sites reopening.

The move will allow an estimated 400,000 people to return to work. The city was the biggest US virus hotspot with nearly 600 confirmed daily deaths at the height of the crisis.

Children in South Africa began returning to classrooms today as part of a loosening of restrictions. South Africa has counted nearly 50,000 cases of the coronavirus — the most of any country in sub-Saharan Africa — along with almost 1,000 deaths.

Brazil has registered another 1,382 fatalities bringing the death toll in Latin America’s worst-hit country to 37,312 amid criticism of the government’s handling of the pandemic.

India is reopening its restaurants, shopping centres and religious places in most states even as the number of cases grows. Another 9,983 cases were reported today. The 206 new fatalities were the highest single-day rise and takes the death toll to 7,135.

People in the Philippines who cancel food delivery orders could be jailed under a proposed bill. Delivery drivers often have to pay for the food upfront before being reimbursed by the customer.
