A newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached has died after falling seven floors from an apartment block in New York.

The body of the baby girl was found at the back of the house on 130 West 183rd Street following the horrific plunge in the Bronx yesterday.

Police are investigating whether the baby was dead before it hit the ground.

Neighbour Sammy Batista told the New York Daily News: “The baby looked like it was new, it was on the floor covered in blood.

“It was terrible. It hurt my heart.”

A woman believed to be the baby's mother was today being treated in hospital.

She initially denied she was recently pregnant but has since admitted the child was hers, the newspaper reported.
