A teenage prisoner has posed for a mugshot dressed in a t-shirt featuring a picture from his previous police station visit.

The comical photograph of 19-year-old Robert Burt has gone viral online after it was shared by his colleague from a restaurant in the US state of Maine.

Police in Somerset County arrested Burt for driving under the influence and without a licence on June, according to reports.

But when he returned to the police station last Sunday to serve his sentence, he donned the bright orange t-shirt with his own mugshot.

The inmate wrote on Facebook that officers asked him to hold his prisoner ID slate "so that you could see the shirt" and they subsequently "laughed their asses off" at the photograph.

He later described the picture as "probably the best mug shot ever".

He was reportedly freed last Sunday after spending 48 hours in custody.
