A man in California charged past firefighters to save his dog still inside the burning house.

Jose Guzman saved his pet from the fierce flames which were engulfing his home in Palo, San Diego, as firefighters hosed down the building.

Footage from the scene shows Mr Guzman ignoring the pleas of firemen, and running inside to find his pit bull terrier named Gabana.

The emergency workers appeared uncertain whether they should go in after him, while they continued trying to control the flames.

Mr Guzman resurfaces a few moments later, beckoning his dog away from the blaze.

Mr Guzman told ABC10 News: “When I ran through a curtain of fire where my van was and fence, I didn’t know what was behind that.

“I knew my dog was there.”

He told reporters that he “couldn’t see anything” as he ran through the fire.

“All I wanted was to get my dog. I came in here, I didn’t hesitate. I just had to get her,” he said.

“She’s part of the family.”

Mr Guzman, his wife and two daughters had moved into the house two months prior.

No one was hurt in the fire but the family salvaged very little personal possessions from the house, and lost both their cars.

Mr Guzman said: “There’s nothing that survived. Nothing. All our savings were here.

“Me and my family would’ve been destroyed. We love that dog.”

“I’m sure there are people who would have done the same thing.”

The local community set up a GoFundMe page, where people lent their support calling him a "hero."

One supporter posted: "God bless you and your family, sorry for your losses in the fire, but the truly important stuff came out ok."
