Seven people were injured after a sight-seeing ship smashed into a San Diego pier, sending alarmed onlookers scattering for safety.

A YouTube video showed the moment people standing on the Embarcadero ran scurried away yesterday afternoon as the Adventure Hornblower vessel approached at unusual speed.

One elderly woman appeared not to notice what was happening and was ushered away by a worried onlooker.

The Los Angeles Times reported that seven passengers from the 144 on board were injured, with three needing hospital treatment for their neck, leg or back.

A mechanical fault meant the ship's throttle had become stuck, it was claimed, with the crash damaging its hull.

Passenger Osmond DeSousa told the paper: “I saw it coming in fast. It hit the dock, bounced off and continued too fast to stop. The woman next to me fell, she was hurt pretty bad.

"The crew were walking on the deck yelling, 'Brace yourselves or hold on to something.’”

Jim Unger, general manager of Hornblower Cruises and Events, said: “We’re not exactly sure what happened yet."
