Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is considering a run for president, according to reports in the United States.

Mr Bannon, once one of Donald Trump’s closest confidantes, reportedly claimed the president has “lost a step” and is behaving “like an 11-year-old child”.

According to Vanity Fair, he gives Mr Trump just a 30 per cent chance of serving out his first term in office and says he believes the president could be impeached.

Mr Bannon, the right wing head of Breitbart News, was fired from the West Wing in August and deemed a loser in an ideological battle over the direction of the Trump administration.

He lashed out at the time, claiming “the Trump presidency that we fought for, and won, is over”.

He faced further scorn after backing Roy Moore, the controversial Republican candidate who lost a Senate seat in Alabama to his Democrat underdog rival following allegations of sexual misconduct.

But he remains close to Mr Trump despite being axed and they often speak on the phone. Vanity Fair writer Gabriel Sherman said Mr Bannon also praised the president but said he might run for his job in 2020 if he decides not to seek a second term.

Contemplating his future, Mr Bannon said he had no fear of political failure. “I’m not a political operative. I’m a revolutionary,” he added.

Mr Bannon last night denied having any Oval Office aspirations.

“#FakeNews. Steve is 100% not running for President. He is not a politician,” a spokesperson told Newsweek.
