A man and a woman have been shot dead after gunfire broke out at a homeless camp in the US known as “The Jungle”.

Three others were wounded in the shoot-out in Seattle. Police responded to reports of shots fired at about 7.15pm to the area in the south of the city.

The five victims were found in woodland near the encampment, police said.

Assistant Seattle Police Chief Bob Merner confirmed the victims lived at the camp. He said police had reason to believe it was a targeted attack.

No one has been arrested. Police are searching for two people they say are "persons of interest" in the case.

Police said an unidentified woman died at the scene and a man died at hospital later.

The three others who were injured, whose ages ranged between 24 and 45, were in surgery on Tuesday night for gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and back, a Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman said.
