A French museum has admitted its waxwork of President Emmanuel Macron is "not beautiful" after it received a barrage of criticism online.

The statue was set to go on display at the Grevin museum in Paris but the unveiling could be put on hold after the work was compared to the characters from Thunderbirds and a Ken doll.

Grevin's director Yves Delhommeau told AFP: "A tense and anguished face, a frozen statue that doesn't 'live', this is not beautiful, something just doesn't work.

He added that the statue has not yet been approved which could delay the unveiling which was set for May 24.

Mr Delhommeau also said that the footage of the waxwork was taken in the middle of production and some improvements have been made.

After footage of the waxwork emerged online, people began to share their opinions on who the work of art resembled.

According to the Telegraph, a Grevin sculpture costs between 50,000 (£43,645) to 60,000 (£52,378) euros and takes around six months to make.

The Grevin museum is often compared to Madame Tussauds and also houses models of celebrities including George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Mr Delhommeau said that Mr Macron had not met with them in order for them to scan his face and so sculptors were forced to work with pictures of the 40-year-old.
