Hunt warns EU over 'catastrophic failure in statecraft'

Jeremy Hunt has warned EU leaders to avoid making a “catastrophic failure in statecraft” that will lead to a no-deal Brexit.

The runner-up of July’s Tory leadership contest urged them to reach a compromise with Boris Johnson before it is too late.

Mr Hunt said the bloc in the past has been guilty of misreading the political situation in the UK.

He warned against leaders hanging “tight” to see if Boris Johnson gains a majority with an election win.

XR prepares to 'shut down' London airport for three days

London City Airport is today braced for disruption after Extinction Rebellion (XR) vowed to shut down operations for three days.

Some 18,000 passengers could be hit with travel chaos, with 286 flights scheduled on the first day of the planned demonstration.

The climate change activists plan to begin the so-called shutdown at 9am and intend to block security gates.

If that fails the group said it will occupy the DLR station and the road outside the terminal.

It comes after police arrested 800 people in London in the first three days of the group's "international rebellion".

How a dog is helping university students with mental health

A dog has been taken on as a new recruit at a university to help students with their mental health.

“Time spent with animals can alleviate worry, provide comfort and help people deal with feelings of isolation and loneliness,” the university said.

"Combining this with fresh air and physical exercise is a good recipe for positive physical and mental wellbeing,” it added.

England-France cancelled as super typhoon approaches

England's Rugby World Cup group decider against France has been cancelled as a super typhoon approaches Japan.

The match is to be abandoned without a ball being kicked for the first time the 32 years of the tournament’s history.

Super Typhoon Hagibis is bound for Tokyo and likely to make landfall on Saturday, when England’s fixture was set to take place.

But the decision means they will enter the quarter-finals without having played for a fortnight.
