Two zebras have caused havoc in Philadelphia after going on the run from the circus.

The pair escaped from the UniverSoul Circus outside the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in west Philadelphia at around 2pm local time on Sunday, and ran amok through the city's streets before they were recaptured.

Dozens of pictures and videos were posted on social media of the exotic animals on the loose in the city, dragging their ropes - which were presumably meant to keep them restrained - behind them.

Twitter user @JahMari_Couture wrote: "We [were] buying tickets for the circus & the zebras broke out & running down the street. They can't catch them.

"This lady came back to the front snappin saying she wanted a refund. She said the zebras almost ran her over when she was ordering her food.

"She said she twisted her neck when she jumped out the way."

He said around seven people were chasing after the zebras, but failed to catch up with them.

The two zebras were eventually captured about an hour later by Philadelphia police.

Police said in a tweet: "Zebras in custody. They are already sporting old-timey prisoner getup ahead of trial and sentencing.

"Have faith, fellas."
