PM to set out food summit details

Prime Minister David Cameron has already signalled plans to hold an event on food security
26 July 2012

David Cameron is expected to announce details of a summit to tackle Third World hunger as David Beckham visits him in Downing Street.

The former England football captain and Unicef ambassador will present the Prime Minister with a letter, co-signed by celebrities including singer Robbie Williams, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, urging him to take immediate action on child malnutrition.

Mr Cameron has already signalled plans to hold an event on food security, which would build on G8 commitments to combat hunger, during the London Olympics.

Save The Children said it understood that the summit would be on August 12, the last day of the Olympics.

The move comes as corn and soya have reached record prices which, combined with crop failures and rising fuel prices, is making it more difficult for parents to feed their children properly.

Save The Children chief executive Justin Forsyth said: "Today the Prime Minister is firing the starting gun, signalling that the world needs to sit up and take urgent action on the needless deaths of many millions of children.

"Hunger claims the lives of 300 children every hour. The Olympic summit offers real hope that this could change.

"It won't end the growing crisis right away, but if it can agree a target to reduce child malnutrition and set out a clear ambition for 2013 - when Britain hosts the G8 - it could be the most impressive Olympic legacy ever."
