Strong winds affect 25,000 homes

Engineers are working to restore power to 25,000 homes in Wales after strong wind gusts over the weekend.

Speeds of up to 89mph were recorded at Mumbles near Swansea on Saturday.

Forecaster John Hutchinson, from the Press Association's weather division MeteoGroup, said gusts of up to 55mph were expected on central and south England and south Wales.

"I think 55mph is the sort of thing to blow objects around and cause the odd tree to fall down," he said.

"People who are out and about should take care (but)... the worst of it seems to be over."

A Western Power Distribution spokesman said 25,000 customers were affected by the strong wind gusts across wales.

The strong gales also caused traffic chaos, when an overturned caravan blocked the M4 both ways for two hours between Margam and Pyle.

A tree also fell onto a car in Park Street in Bridgend and a roof was blown off a garage onto a neighbouring house at Beddau near Pontypridd.

Mr Hutchinson said while the winds were subsiding, heavy rainfall was expected for the southern parts of Wales and England.

Frost was expected across some parts of northern Britain as well, he said.
