GB comprehensively beaten in Sochi

Great Britain's hopes of reaching the wheelchair curling final at the Winter Paralympics were ended in emphatic fashion by Russia on Saturday.

Aileen Neilson's rink, looking for revenge for their 11-2 defeat to the hosts during the round-robin stage, instead found themselves humbled again, this time 13-4.

Britain will now face China, to whom they lost 6-3 on Thursday, for the bronze medal.

The decisive moment of the semi-final came in the fourth end as Russian skip Andrey Smirnov's takeout and Neilson's subsequent miss sealed a seven-stone end for the hosts.

That took them from 4-3 to 11-3 in front and from that moment there was no way back for beleaguered Britain.

So comprehensive was the defeat that the eighth and final end was not required. It was the team's third British record nine-stone loss at the Sochi Games.

They now have to pick themselves up for the bronze-medal match on Saturday afternoon.
