Kumar leaves England struggling

Alastair Cook was one of four wickets to fall inside 15 overs
15 January 2013

Bhuvneshwar Kumar ripped apart England's top order as India moved into a dominant position in the second one-day international.

Kumar accounted for the key trio of Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan as the tourists, in search of 286, slumped to 77 for four after 18 overs.

India's total of 285 for six looked certain to be significantly lower until a late onslaught from Mahendra Singh Dhoni (72) and Ravindra Jadeja (61no) saw them plunder 108 off the last 10 overs.

Ian Bell, England's form player on tour, lasted just six deliveries of the reply. His dismissal was lamentable, following a gentle wide ball from Shami Ahmed and feathering a catch behind.

Cook scored England's first boundary off the final delivery of the third over, easing Kumar through the covers for four and two more boundaries for the England captain followed in Ahmed's second over.

Pietersen gave himself a handful of sighters before he started playing his shots and was rewarded with four boundaries in 10 balls. Cook should have been run out in the ninth over following a misunderstanding between the wickets but Jadeja inexplicably picked the wrong end.

Ishant Sharma's first over cost 13, Pietersen again to the fore, but Cook was gone moments later, Kumar winning a questionable lbw verdict.

That brought Joe Root to the crease for the first time in ODIs with the score 58 for two and he promptly pulled his fourth delivery to long leg for four.

Kumar then struck twice in the 15th over, Pietersen bowled between bat and pad after shifting around in the crease and Morgan caught at the wicket for a duck.

It was surely a decisive effort. India's eventual total had seemed all but impossible until Dhoni and Jadeja's late histrionics, which saw 108 added in the last 10 overs.
