Tour de France winners Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins will head up a strong Great Britain squad for the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Italy.

Froome, who succeeded Wiggins as the winner of cycling's most prestigious tour in July, will bid to build on his triumph in Paris by adding road race gold in Toscana.

He features alongside the likes of Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Alex Dowsett and Geraint Thomas in the road race squad, with a final decision to be made on which eight of the 10 chosen riders compete.

Wiggins will attempt to add world gold to his Olympic title in the time trial, in which Dowsett is also entered.

British Cycling performance manager Shane Sutton said: "I think the selection of the elite teams speak for themselves, we've got Olympic medallists, Tour de France winners and former world champions all in the mix and I think we could do well across the board there."

The World Championships run from September 22 to 29.
