Scent is so inextricably linked with memory that switching up your traditional fragrance can help mark a new stage in life.

You need not wait till January, September or even a Monday to transform your mindset and reset, securing a new signature aroma might just do the trick.

Jane Ollis, medical biochemist and environmental scientist, explains “Scent has the most potential if you want to change how your brain is operating. The olfactory bulb has a magical direct route straight to the brain's limbic system, which is important for regulating emotions and forming memories”. This means that the right notes can be really evocative in changing our mood, whether that’s the whiff of mowed grass or a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

In the fragrance space, we have long-established associations in terms of seasons. Lighter, fresher perfumes are typically worn during the summer, while smoke, wood, cinnamon and pine pave the way for a cosy winter feeling.

But the power of a scent family can go beyond this. Rich ouds are hugely popular and feel luxurious and opulent, vanilla can be nostalgic with its sweet associations and rose is synonymous with love. Coconut-based scents have transportive properties to tropical destinations, while patchouli is said to activate a part of the brain to ignite self-confidence. Jasmine brings a feeling of positivity with every spritz, but amber, on the other hand, is warming and deep. Sandalwood has a seductive quality.

Your fragrance wardrobe can be harnessed as a tool to make you feel a certain way as well as project externally what you’re hoping to portray – be it assured or alluring. It can also mark a meaningful moment so that as soon as you smell the concoction once again, you will be immediately transported back.

This is why many brides seek out a special aroma for their big day. But this works not just for a wedding, it can be for a big date or a long-awaited holiday. Scenting the occasion is a powerful way to recall it.

So, while many subscribe to the notion of a signature scent, it feels limiting to stick to simply one aroma and not harness its diverse potential. But where to start in the selection process?

We’ve called on the experts at The Perfume Shop, The Fragrance Shop and more to share the bestselling fragrances. We hope this will offer a guide to help you find the perfect aroma to suit any upcoming occasion or to enhance your mood.

Diptyque Do Son

Diptyque

Featuring notes of tuberose, orange blossom and jasmine, you may think that Do Son would be a scent that smells great initially, but won’t linger for very long. However, the blend also contains amber wood for more potent notes that ensure the wearer can still smell the fragrance on their skin throughout the day.

Yves Coueslant, one of Diptyque’s founders, spent his summers in Do Son in Halong Bay, which inspired this heady and spicy scent reminiscent of tuberoses and a sea breeze.

The scent is so fresh and light, which although containing floral notes, is not too sweet. It’s a warm and potent scent that can work all year round due to the unique concoction.
