Renowned Bollywood actor and producer Shashi Kapoor has died at the age of 79, his family has confirmed.

The legendary star, who was a member of the famous Kapoor dynasty in India, had been battling chronic kidney disease for some time and was hospitalised in Mumbai.

“Mr. Shashi Kapoor died at 5.20 pm on 4th December at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai,” Dr Ram Narain, executive director of the hospital, told The Hindu.

Kapoor had been in and out of hospital over the last few years and had been on dialysis, the newspaper reports.

The star was best known for his work in films including Deewar, In Custody and Junoon, having started his career as a child actor.

He became one of the most recognisable faces of the Hindi film industry and went on to appear in more than 150 films in a career spanning six decades.

Kapoor also starred in a number of British films including The Householder and Bombay Talkie and had numerous roles on stage.

He was married to English actress Jennifer Kendal, who died in 1984, and is survived by two sons, Kunal and Karan, and daughter, Sanjana.
