Britons are so obsessed with house prices that one in seven home-owners have pretended to be moving house to keep up to date with the latest house prices in an area.

Research claims that 14 per cent of homeowners have viewed other properties, and 11 per cent have enquired about house prices when they have no intention of actually buying the property.

Londoners are the most obsessive, according to a survey from the Woolwich, with nearly one in five regularly logging onto the web to keep up with the latest house price movements, three times as many as Birmingham residents. It has dubbed the obsession with house prices "phantom movers syndrome".
