Bosses from the BBC failed in their attempts to stop actors from drinking on the set of long running BBC soap EastEnders by installing non-alcoholic beer pumps, it has been revealed by Danny Dyer.

Dyer, who joined the cast last Christmas as Mick Carter landlord of the iconic Queen Vic, told Jonathan Ross that producers of the show had tried to put non-alcoholic beer into the pub’s pumps to ensure no alcohol was consumed – but this failed.

In his interview with Ross that is due to be aired tomorrow, the former Football Factory star explained: "There are a couple of good pumps. They tried to put non-alcoholic beer in there but it don't come out properly."

As a result alcoholic beer was reinstated in The Queen Vic and this is something that TV hard-man Dyer makes the most of when on set.

He explained: "On a good day I slip over to the good pumps and have half a lager ... not taking the piss, as I don't want to get in trouble. You have to keep yourself busy behind the bar."

In the interview he also revealed that performing on the show is extremely overwhelming. He said: "I can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by it. You're brought up watching it and all of a suddenly you are there."

He added: "It's very surreal. You walk on there and I'm running the Vic. I had a scene with Dot [June Brown] and it was in the laundrette and it's massive. I'm waiting to go in, I come in half way through the scene and I'm psyching myself up. It's like I'm going into a ring with [Mike] Tyson. I'm going in with a bird who's pushing 90.”
