David Bowie breaks Adele’s Vevo record for most views in 24 hours

David Bowie has broken the Vevo record for most video views in the space of 24 hours.

The iconic musician, who passed away on Sunday, has beaten Adele’s record to achieve 51 million views across his channel in just one day.

Videos for hits including classics Space Oddity and The Jean Genie as well as new songs from album Blackstar were viewed millions of times on January 11.

Lazarus, which was taken from the new album, is the star’s most viewed video on the channel after being watched 11.1 million times.

The bank of 60 Vevo videos has now been watched more times than previous record-holder Adele, whose Vevo catalogue got 36 million views on October 23 last year.

According to Vevo, Bowie’s back catalogue also saw a 5198% increase in views on January 11th over the average of the previous seven days.

Blackstar was released on Friday January 8, just two days before his death, and is on track to shoot to the top of the UK charts and the Billboard 200.

Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti has just revealed that the star was in the process of recording new material in his final weeks.

He told Rolling Stone: “At that late stage, he was planning the follow-up to 'Blackstar', and I was thrilled.

“And I thought, and he thought, that he’d have a few months, at least.”
