US actress Leslie Jones has returned to Twitter days after quitting "in tears" over racist abuse.

Jones, 48, was living in "personal hell" after her account was inundated with offensive messages following the release of Ghostbusters.

But the actress has returned, and was greeted with supportive messages from fans.

Jones tweeted: "Welp...a b**** thought she could stay away. But who else is gonna live tweet Game of Thrones!!"

She added: "Thanks for the love and support I received! Made me feel real special. See you later on @sethmeyers #LoveForLeslieJ (sic)."

Jones announced on Tuesday that she was quitting the micro blogging site after trolls compared her to Harambe, the gorilla that was shot at Cincinnati Zoo earlier this year.

She told fans: “I feel like I'm in a personal hell. I didn't do anything to deserve this. It's just too much. It shouldn't be like this. So hurt right now.

“I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s*** I got today...wrong.”

Prior to signing out, Jones encouraged fans to dismiss calls to simply ignore abusive comments and called for Twitter to clamp down on trolls.

Breitbart journalist Milo Yiannopoulos has been permanently banned from the site after he was accused of getting some of his 338,000 followers to join in the abuse.

Ghostbusters director Paul Feig hit back at the trolls, tweeting: "Leslie Jones is one of the greatest people I know. Any personal attacks against her are attacks against us all. #LoveForLeslieJ."
