John Barrowman told fans he felt as though he had been “hit by a car” after being rushed to hospital with an appendicitis.

The TV star, 50, underwent emergency surgery at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California on Tuesday.

Barrowman – who felt like he was coming down with flu – said he was in “agony” and praised the doctors for catching the infected appendix before it burst.

Speaking in a video from his hospital bed while on oxygen he told fans: “I was woken up at 6am and whisked right into surgery. I feel like I have been hit by a car.

“I’m just sore all over and my voice is sore because of the tube going down my throat.”

He continued: “The staff in the surgery knew who I was, they were fans which was kind of funny.

“I was just lucky my appendix didn’t burst, they caught it in time.

“I was in a lot of agony yesterday. I knew something was up, I felt really bad. I felt like I was getting a flu.”

He added that he has “three holes in me” from the laser surgery which was used to remove the infected organ and that he is preparing to return home.

Proving to fans that he was nearly back to full health he joked in a live Twitter video that he’s “got gas” which is coming out “rapidly like a machine gun”.

The emergency procedure came hours after he attended Comic Con in San Diego wearing a Doctor Who theme dress.

He continued to show off his love for the sci-fi show by wearing a pair of Tardis socks in his hospital bed where he was surrounded by family members.
