AMERICAN chat-show host Jon Stewart has ended his 16-year stint on The Daily Show with appearances by his former “victims” Hillary Clinton and John McCain — and a send-off performance by Bruce Springsteen.

Last night’s show included appearances by correspondents, former writers and contributors and a finale by Springsteen and the E Street Band, whom Stewart credits with inspiring him to leave Trenton, New Jersey.

Springsteen thanked Stewart, 52, “for everything” and wished him “happy and safe travels”, before playing Land of Hope and Dreams and Born to Run.

Clinton joked that she was “disappointed” by his departure saying: “And just as I’m running for president. What a bummer.”

At the end colleagues and guests stormed the stage, hugging Stewart, and E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg gave him his sticks as a parting gift.

Stewart took over the show in 1999 and established himself as one of the most influential satirists in the US and the voice of liberal America.
