Rebecca Ferguson has said that she is keen to pursue darker and more “uncomfortable” roles after rising to fame in the Mission Impossible franchise.

The Swedish-British actress, 34, plays MI6 operative Isla in the sixth instalment of the Tom Cruise action franchise, Fallout, but is looking forward to playing a villainous role in Doctor Sleep, the follow-up to The Shining.

“I have an incredible team around me so there are reasons to why scripts come my way, they filter things out, but I’d love to try something awkward and uncomfortable, something that makes me go ‘what were we thinking,'"she told the Standard.

“I’m actually playing a real bad***, a mean, uncomfortable role after this in the continuation of The Shining, Rose The Hat, who likes torturing people.”

The film will co-star Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny Torrence, directed by Mike Flanagan and based on Stephen King’s novel.

Ferguson is also keen to star on the West End stage at some point. “I would love to, that would be incredible, bloody scary,” she said.

Ferguson has starred in films including The Greatest Showman, Life and The Girl on the Train since her breakout appearance in 2015’s Rogue Nation.

“I had no idea what to expect the first time around so yes that did lay the platform for me to step on to,” she said.

“I knew what I needed body-wise to be able to manage the stunts, I had learnt so much when it came to my own strength and capacity and I also watch people when they work so I’ve learnt so much from Tom and the way he is on set that I’ve brought into films that I’ve done in between.”

Ferguson said it was important for her Mission Impossible character to be just as “bad***” as the male characters in the film.

“She is an equal to Ethan Hunt, she is bloody good, she’s intelligent, she’s strong-minded, she has an agenda and she will do anything to reach it,” she said.
