The Good Thief - Momentum Pictures, 15, £17.99/£12.99

Nick Nolte is craggily charming as the ageing thief giving up the smack for an art heist, and it's a good thing too, because Neil Jordan's film is very messy.

Based on a cult 1950s flick by Jean-Pierre Melville, this tale of that one final joust with Lady Luck is enlivened by Nolte's gently sparring relationships with policeman Tcheky Karyo and tart-with-a-heart Nutsa Kukhianidze.

It's snazzily shot, but Jordan hankers disastrously after profundity and his attempts to link Nolte's filching property with Picasso's borrowing of ideas is just silly. With commentary and making-of doc.
