Romeo Beckham fell victim to online trolls who hit out at his position as a mascot for England’s match against Switzerland.

The second son of the Beckham’s accompanied footballer Wayne Rooney onto the pitch at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night, but some were unhappy with the decision to allow the “privileged” teen to lead the players out.

One user took to Twitter, writing: “Romeo Beckham is the mascot for tonights England game. What a load of old s***e. Why not a disadvantaged kid or something like that?”

Another posted: “Romeo Beckham is mascot 2nite. Isn't there somebody less privileged and more worthy that could have had a chance of a lifetime???”

One user tweeted sarcastically: “Romeo Beckham did well to be drawn out of the ballot to be England mascot. Bet the odds were stacked against him.”

David Beckham told ITV that he used his “connections” with the FA to secure the gig as a present for his son’s 13th birthday.

"Romeo is obviously very lucky as part of his 13th birthday – because of a few connections still at the FA – is one of the mascots, so he is excited."

The young Burberry model celebrated his milestone birthday on September 1 following a summer in Los Angeles.

His mother Victoria Beckham tweeted a photo of the pair alongside the caption: "Happy birthday baby boy. We r all so proud and love you so, so much. x 13 today!!!! X mummy."

She later tweeted a picture of Romeo alongside his brothers Brooklyn, 16, and Cruz, 10, as the family celebrated in London.

David also posted a touching birthday message to his "beautiful boy" alongside a black and white picture of the pair.
