SAG Award nominations 2016: Helen Mirren and Idris Elba lead the way for the Brits

Helen Mirren and Idris Elba have both received two nominations each for next year’s SAG Awards.

In a strong year for the Brits, Mirren has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Woman in Gold and for Best Supporting Actress for Trumbo.

Elba, who is rumoured to be in the running for the role of James Bond, picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Beasts of No Nation and for his TV series Luther.

English actor Mark Rylance has also been given nominations for Best Supporting Actor in Bridge of Spies and for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series for Wolf Hall.

Other British nominations for the American awards including Eddie Redmayne who has been given a Best Actor nod for the Forthcoming The Danish Girl.

Kate Winslet has been recognised for her role in Danny Boyles’ Steve Jobs in the Supporting Actress category while Maggie Smith has been nominated for Downton Abbey.

The hugely popular ITV show, which finishes this month with a Christmas special, will go up against the likes of Homeland and Game of Thrones for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Noticeable snubs on the list include absent nominations for Jennifer Lawrence in Joy and Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton in Spotlight.

The awards will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 30.
